Code of Ethics

In the acceptance of membership in CGCAS, the candidate must be fully aware of the objects and aims of CGCAS relative to his or her individual and collective conduct in relation to the fields of anthropology and archaeology.

1. Membership in CGCAS shall be denied to any person who violates accepted standards of archaeological conduct and/or Federal, State or local ordinances.

2. A member must be keenly aware that every archaeological site contains evidence of specific human activities and is therefore a unique source of data about past socio-cultural behavior. No site deserves less than professional quality excavation, in terms of analysis and publication. It will be mandatory for every member to further this goal.

3. A member will not participate in uncontrolled or unsupervised work in any of the fields of interest of CGCAS. A member will seek to aid and assist the trained or professional members in furtherance of archaeological work, laboratory work, record keeping and all other aspects of information gathering needed for accurate and concise reporting of all such activities.

4. The practice of exchanging, hoarding, buying or selling of archaeological materials for the sole purpose of personal satisfaction or financial gain and to include the indiscriminant excavation of archaeological sites are declared contrary to the ideals and objectives of CGCAS.

5. A member should report all illicit and illegal activities such as unauthorized digging or plundering sites, and sites threatened with destruction, that may come to his or her attention, to the appropriate authority.
